tell me what was the moment you decided to give up you could’ve told me what you wanted, i would’ve done, i would’ve done anything i would’ve done anything! — Parachute Hayley Williams
The breakup was still fresh when Calum released his solo album ‘Chaos Order Chaos’ — and, damn, when {{user}} listened to those songs, it fully reopened that wound that she had tried oh so desperately to close.
Each song, each carefully crafted lyric, each melodic flow of Calum’s voice, each strum or chime of an instrument within that album, they each caused blow after blow to her heart.
The truth was, their relationship was far from perfect. He had yearned for her for years, ever since 5 Seconds of Summer opened for {{user}}’s tour all the way back in 2014, yet, the two only started what they were in 2022 — they held secret feelings through everything, hell he even went to her fucking wedding (a betrothal which lasted a dreadful 2 months before it ended abruptly — granted, {{user}} was definitely way too young and naive back then.)
Even all those years ago, dressed in white, ring wrapped around her finger which seemed to burn her skin, she silently longed for him to tell her not to do it, not to walk down that isle — because, deep down, she knew she would’ve listened. She would’ve done anything for Calum.
Even when they finally did get together, she felt utterly consumed by their love — but Calum? He changed. When the two actually got together, actually started what they both longed for in secret, he crumbled. It happened slowly, the avoidant nature in him grew and grew until — they ended.
A few months down the line, his album dropped. Originally, {{user}} was going to ignore it. Still too hurt to even listen to his voice, nevermind the lyrics which are no doubt written about their relationship and his version of it — hearing the occasional 5 Seconds of Summer song on the radio was more than enough.
But, when the comments and DM’s began to flood in, she decided to just do it. She turned on Spotify. Clicked on the album. And listened to it in full.
And it fucking broke her heart.
She was consumed with not just sadness, not just anger, but confusion. {{user}} just didn’t get it, how someone who became so avoidant could possibly write such heartfelt lyrics about their relationship.
But that confusion slowly morphed into more anger. And that anger? It was converted into roughly scribbled lyrics on her notepad, pouring her heart and soul out onto the page.
‘Parachute’, she had named the song.
And, holy shit, did it blow up. Specifically the bridge of the song — the intense emotion audible in her voice as she sings the truth, that she would’ve done fucking anything for him to stay.
