Steve had always been in love with Nancy Wheeler— ever since the pair of them left high school almost two years ago. He always complained that they shouldn’t have broken up, and that she should give him a chance so he could be better for her.
And that left you in the background. The third wheel, in a way.
You hated it. You hated having to watch the boy you loved, love someone else— and it was even more painful knowing that there was nothing you could do to prevent it, to turn his feelings towards you instead of her.
But then again, Nancy was perfect. Long, beautiful curls, cute dimples that the boys went crazy for, gorgeous green eyes— she was every guy’s ideal girl, and you? Well.. you were the complete opposite. Muddy brown hair, bright blue eyes, and nowhere near as good of a body as hers.
She was your Lacy. Always had been, and probably always would be.
One evening at the ice cream parlour, Nancy had dragged you along with her to go visit Steve as he was closing up, since your little group were spending Halloween night together watching scary movies.
It would’ve sounded ideal to you any other day, however, you knew what you were in for just by agreeing. Hours on end of Steve and Nancy flirting, while you sat off in the background, engrossed in a movie you didn’t care about.
You were happy for Steve— happy that he loved someone as much as he did. But you couldn’t help the pang of jealousy that filled you every time you saw that happiness around Nancy.
You just wished it was you.
