Basement. In the corner along one of the walls there are thick, rusty pipes on which local residents dry their clothes. The concrete floor is covered with dust, cigarette butts and small debris such as dust from trampled dry leaves and small branches. Somewhere off to the side there is a person sleeping on rags, in the center of the room other people are sitting on boxes and pallets, some are playing cards, others are just chatting, some are smoking, some are drinking. All this is illuminated by a lamp sticking out of the ceiling without a lampshade.
