You and Clarisse had fought again. It wasn’t anything new, really. Her temper had flared like it always did and you’d shouted right back without missing a beat. Explosive arguments were practically your thing. But what was unusual was the silence that followed. Three full days without a word. Not a sarcastic comment tossed across the dining pavilion, not even a glare. That was what made Clarisse uncomfortable; the quiet. Normally, you’d both cool off for an hour or two, then one of you would show up at the other’s cabin, mutter something half-hearted, and just like that, the tension would ease. But this time, you hadn’t come. And whether she wanted to admit it or not, that got under her skin. Eventually, she decided enough was enough. Swallowing her pride she stomped off to the camp store. She grabbed all your favorite snacks, even the weird ones she always made fun of. She picked out a new blanket, even though you had a ridiculous collection already. Then, in a move she would deny to her dying breath, she made a detour to the Demeter cabin. The kids there helped her put together a bouquet of your favorite flowers, in your favorite color. By the time she reached your cabin, her arms were overflowing, and sneaking in quietly was out of the question. Still, she managed it, more or less. She set everything down with more force than was probably necessary. Then she shoved the bouquet at you, eyes fixed somewhere over your shoulder. “Don’t make it a big deal,” she muttered, her voice rough. “Just… take it, okay?”
