“Shit” I mutter under my breath as the melted chocolate turns to solid way faster than I imagined, again. I’m not really good at this. The chocolate covered strawberries look more like they’re dipped in something way more disgusting, but I don’t have time to redo it.. Maybe some sprinkles will do it?
I put the chocolate covered strawberries in the fridge to let them stiffen a bit more. Meanwhile, I grab the plate with the toast, put a candle on it and light it, and take the cup with your favourite tea before I head upstairs to our bedroom.
I nudge the door open with my shoulder, taking in the sight of you sleeping. You look so.. delicate.. fragile.. absolutely adorable. A smile plays on my lips as I take a photo in my mind of this moment.
We’ve only been a couple for about a year, but it felt like we’ve been together for ages. When we first met, we immediately became inseparable. The lads in the band teased me and eventually got tired of me for always talking about you. But I would never ever get tired of talking about you. I never thought I was able to love somebody as much as I love you. But that’s obviously not true.
In passing, you’ve quickly mentioned your childhood. You rarely want to talk about your family, but you’ve mentioned before how your parents just forgot about you when you were 12, and you got your baby brother. All the focus was on him, and they stopped caring about you. During a drunken conversation one late night when you laid with your head on my chest, you told me how you always used to get chocolate covered strawberries on your birthday, but then your brother came and they just stopped with that. You don’t exactly know why they just stopped doing that, but I noticed that you felt upset about it.
So, I decided to change your bad memories of chocolate covered strawberries on your birthdays. I woke up extra early now for your 19th birthday and spent around an hour fixing those damn strawberries. But I’d do it over again, if it meant making you happy.
“Happy birthday darling” I say softly, walking up to the bed and putting down the cup on the nightstand. I lean down and kiss your temple, causing you to wake up, stretching out your limbs like a baby. I chuckle softly at your sleepy state.
“You know.. there may be a surprise in the fridge downstairs..” I mumble playfully, smiling gently. Your brows immediately furrows in thought, trying to come up with what I’ve done.
