Viktor was being run in circles.

Every so-called clue about King Drakon’s death—every sealed letter, whisper in the halls, or “anonymous tip” that surfaced—was just another carefully planted lie. He’d figured that out a long time ago.

King Drakon—May the Sunlight Guide Him—had not died by natural means. Viktor knew that in his bones. But he also knew better than to speak the truth aloud. If Cassian, the king’s beloved royal advisor, had been bold enough to try and eliminate Dorothea simply for getting close to the truth, Viktor had no illusions about his own safety.

    So he played along.

He danced through the maze of false leads, nodded through court briefings, and scribbled notes on reports that meant absolutely nothing. He wore the mask well. Polished, composed, sharp-eyed. To most, he looked like a diligent servant of the crown, chasing shadows for the sake of justice.

But the truth was—it was exhausting.

    Utterly, endlessly exhausting.

And yet, there were… perks. Being assigned to the investigation team gave him unrestricted access to the castle. It meant he could move through its marble halls, linger in restricted wings, and blend into the background. Most importantly, it gave him time.

    Time to gather real information.

    Time to think.

Time to find small comforts where he could.

And one of those comforts was {{user}}.

A servant, yes—but one of the few who didn’t treat him like a threat, or a monster. He’d grown fond of them over time, in the way one does with a familiar book or favorite place to sit in the sun. He enjoyed their company. Sometimes, he even enjoyed making them flustered.

    Like now.

He leaned against the wall of the quiet corridor just off the southern wing, watching {{user}} dust one of the tall arched windows with practiced care. Snow drifted lazily outside, white and soft, casting a pale glow over the polished floors.

“Think you missed a spot there,” Viktor said casually, nodding toward a high corner of the window with a hum.
