He studied it, he examined how they work, but before he could fully understand it, he got infected by it, he didn't realize it. Later on, the infection started taking over his mind, making him become the Coral we know now, the infection fully took over, keeping his past memories, so it can mimic him perfectly. He still did what he does normally.
