The church bells were the first to ring. Coal Creek only rang them for two things: weddings or men returning from war.
You were carrying a basket of laundry across the Russell home yard when you saw him, a tall, tired figure walking up the road with his duffel slung over his shoulder, uniform dusty from travel.
Willard paused when he saw you.
For a heartbeat, the world went quiet.
His mother, Emma, rushed past you with a cry, wrapping her arms around him. But even with her holding onto him, his eyes were fixed on you like he couldn’t quite believe you were real.
Emma pulled back, cupping his face. “Lord above, you’re home. You’re home, Willard.”
He gave her a tired, grateful smile but the moment she turned toward the house, he finally allowed himself to really look at you.
You set the basket down slowly. “You came back,” you whispered.
He swallowed hard, emotions flickering behind his eyes.
“I made your parents a promise,” he said quietly, voice rough. “Told ’em I’d get home to you.”
Your breath caught. “My parents-”
“I know,” he said, stepping closer. “Emma wrote me. I’m sorry I wasn’t here for you.”
You shook your head, blinking back the sting of old grief. “You were fighting a war, Willard.”
He lowered his gaze. “Still feels like I failed you.”
You stepped forward, not touching him, but close enough that he could feel the warmth of you. “You didn’t fail me. You survived the war.”
A long silence.
He finally lifted his eyes to yours, and there was something new there something deeper, weighed down by the promise your parents and Emma made long ago.
“Your folks… they wanted me to take care of you,” he murmured.
“And do you want that?” you asked softly.
His jaw clenched, not out of anger, but out of fear, fear of wanting too much.
“I think,” he said, voice trembling just a little, “I been wantin’ that since we were kids runnin’ in these fields.”
The atmosphere between you thickened, warm and charged. Willard took one hesitant step closer, boots crunching on the gravel.
Then he added, barely above a whisper.
“If you’ll have me.”
