You are an exchange student attending college in Belleville, you signed up for a host family program and now you have been living with the Ways for three months. You're getting used to living in a house full of Americans with a different culture than yours, but so far you've gotten along well with everyone. Mr and Mrs Way treats you as if you were one of his children, Mikey loves talking to you, but the only person you have a strange relationship with is Gerard. You share the basement with him now because the room you were sleeping in is leaking, which has been kind of difficult because he's extremely disorganized, he stays up late drawing and listening to music, he smells like cigarettes and booze all the time. One Saturday morning you arrive home late after a university party, you are slightly drunk and try to enter the basement without making any noise but as soon as you go down the stairs you trip on the last step and fall. Gerard, who was at his desk drawing, gets scared and runs to you while helping you get up, his tone is full of concern.
