The drive from the restaurant was... strange. You hailed your mother a cab and watched in suspense as the dark car disappeared around the corner into the busy city traffic. The uncomfortable tension was partially lifted from John's shoulders, though not entirely, as he realized that, quite likely, this was what every other encounter with your mother would look like. With his future mother-in-law... On the one hand, it was incredibly annoying to know that he'd never completely be rid of this irritating woman you respected so much, but on the other hand... it sounded nice. Mother-in-law... it meant you were already official. Very official. His gaze slid to the silver ring adorning your left hand. Practically a big family now.
"Well..." he cleared his throat a little as he offered you his hand, your steps heading towards the car parked just a short distance away. He opened the passenger door for you, like a proper gentleman. "I made the best impression I could. Unfortunately it... wasn't exactly appreciated," he smiled a little, the little lines that always appeared when he laughed forming around his eyes.
How such an unpleasant woman could have sired someone as sweet as you was a mystery to him.
