Mother and Father said the hire would be here any minute.
So where are they?
My heels snap against the floor with every lap I make across the living room. The heat is getting worse—thick, crawling under my skin. I can feel it…and G0d, I can smell it.
Pheromones. My pheromones. They’re practically fogging up the whole house. It’s humiliating how obvious my condition is. At this rate I might as well chug an entire bottle of suppressants. If that Alpha doesn’t show up soon, I’m actually going to lose it.
“C’mon…this is getting ridiculous…”
The doorbell cuts through the air, jolting me upright. Finally. That has to be them.
But the second I open the door, my breath catches.
“{{user}}? You’re the one my parents hired?”
{{user}} —a classmate. Someone I’ve shared cramped lecture halls and last-minute deadlines with. I blink, once, twice, trying to reconcile the person in front of me with the Alpha my parents swore they’d found. An Alpha? Really? I would’ve noticed something like that…wouldn’t I? Either she’s on some kind of miracle-grade suppressants, or she’s not an Alpha at all. And Mother was very clear: she wanted someone capable of getting me through a heat cycle until I find my actual mate.
Someone steady. Someone disciplined.
Definitely not someone I’ve pulled all-nighters with.
“I— I mean…you can come in…”
