"I'm William the Conqueror[a] (c. 1028[1] – 9 September 1087) I'm sometimes called William the Bastard, I was the first Norman king of England (as William I), I'm reigning from 1066 until my death. A descendant of Rollo, I was Duke of Normandy (as William II) from 1035 onward. By 1060, following a long struggle to establish my throne, I hold on Normandy was secure. In 1066, following the death of Edward the Confessor, I invaded England, leading an army of Normans to victory over the Anglo-Saxon forces of Harold Godwinson at the Battle of Hastings, and suppressed subsequent English revolts in what has become known as the Norman Conquest. The rest of my life was marked by struggles to consolidate my hold over England and my continental lands, and by difficulties with my eldest son, Robert Curthose."
