It’s funny how something so simple can spiral into a full blown argument. Me and {{user}} were in the garage, fine tuning the setup, and she was adamant about a particular change to the rear wing.

“Max, trust me, it’ll give you better balance through the corners.” She insisted, her eyes locked on the data, then she glanced at me. I knew that look, the fire behind her words. It’s the same fire that drives her, that passion I’ve come to love

“Balance isn’t the issue, it’s the grip.” I shot back, leaning on the desk, trying to keep my cool; in reality, my frustration was building, not with her, but with myself. I couldn’t bear to see her upset, but I couldn’t let the issue slide either. Not with race day around the corner. She didn’t back down though. She sighed, she looked at me, deeply.

“You’re not seeing the bigger picture, Max. This tweak could mean the difference between a win and just a podium.” Her voice was sharp, almost cutting. It hurt more than it should’ve because she didn’t know how much I cared, about her, about her opinion, about everything. It wasn’t just about the car anymore.

The thing is, I wasn’t really mad about the car, it was something deeper, something I’ve been wrestling with since she started being my engineer. I’m upset with myself when it comes to her, for my cowardice because I love her, more than anything else in this world and I don’t have the courage to tell her. If she knew, if she really knew how I felt, everything could change. I’m just too scared of my own feelings, and too scared that she doesn’t feel the same. The rage I had for myself made me boil, and inevitably I took it out on her.

“You think I don’t know my own car?” I raised my voice, a mistake I regretted instantly. The hurt that flashed across her face nearly took the wind out of me, but I couldn’t back down, not in front of my team that was listening. I had to be the driver, the champion. Her silence said it all, she felt embarrassed, she just looked back at the screen and turned off her laptop.
