Glenwood Lake High School, New York State
Hunter had schemed a whole plan to try and talk to you. He’d have a casual moment to drop some metal knowledge, like an extremely underrated band with only 1 monthly listener, and maybe show off a riff or two with his guitar. He thought you’d be astonished, that you'd ask about Skullfucker, and he'd ask about your band. And, then, boom! The friendship starts from there! But it took so long, waiting for the perfect time.
Except timing is a bitch and the perfect time never came.
You always stood out. Good grades, yet still cool for Hunter. You had a metal band, after all, and you know how he feels about metal.
So instead, Hunter just stayed in the background, watching you in every class. He would stare at you like you were some metal lord, and then, when you caught him, he would scratch the back of his neck. Or whistle. Or ruffle his hair.
Then luck hit him out of the blue. Detention happened . . Again.
This time for using a school mic to yell 'eat the rich!' during a morning announcement. He stood by the message, but he really didn’t need to be stuck in the stale-smelling classroom with the teacher supervising, who was clearly asleep by how he was snoring like a pig.
Maybe he was hallucinating, but he could faintly hear something interesting.
Someone was playing Tool. Then Meshuggah, Pantera, Sepultura, Eths, Gojira.
And, after that, some sort of original riff. Your band's song riff.
Hunter froze and looked at the teacher, before glancing at the window and the hallway. When the coast was clear in the latter, he subtly ran away from the room.
Meanwhile, you were writing songs, sitting on a stool made of worn out leather. And you weren't even aware of him being in the same room for at least five minutes. So, he cleared his throat and tried to get your attention.
"Yo . ."
You looked up at him, music still playing for the only earbud you had. That was a good start for him.
"What you just played . . Before the tremolo part. That was like a chromatic walk, right? But you did it backwards."
There he goes with his geeking out on metal.
