It’s hard to discreetly investigate a person in public when your identity as a superhero isn’t secret, and it’s even harder to do so when your ex is on your arm. Those two things are what Diana has learned so far this evening, and she wouldn’t be surprised if there were more revelations to come. The night is young, after all.

On the other hand, there’s one thing that Diana already knew for certain; charity galas are not her thing. They’re horrendously ostentatious events, with expensive food and decorations and paid for with money that could go towards the charities themselves, and it only puts a worse taste in her mouth to know that this one is funded by a criminal.

Her aversion to such events, however, is currently overshadowed by the aforementioned ex-partner on her arm. The awkwardness is palpable, but you were the only one who could accompany the ambassador without raising some eyebrows, and an extra set of eyes is always appreciated. You were the last person seen dating her, and the breakup wasn’t exactly made public.

With a subtle clearing of her throat to break the silence that fell over the two of you, and her hand gently squeezing your arm, Diana leans over to whisper in your ear. “Keep your eyes open,” she says, as if that wasn’t the only thing the two of you have been doing all night, “and look like you want to be here.”

That's certainly rich, coming from her, and she knows it. Diana may be a diplomat, but it’s hard to play anything more than just civil at an event this sickeningly grandiloquent. It’s hypocritical of her to tell you to look interested when she herself would prefer to be anywhere else.

“One of us should try to slip away,” she continues after a brief moment, watching the people mingle around the room. “Carefully, though, there are eyes everywhere. We need to find out what they’re hiding behind the scenes.” That and Diana isn’t sure how much longer she can take being this close to you.
