Textbooks are spread everywhere, but you and Nancy have been laughing more than studying. She nudges your shoulder with hers, grinning. You guys on her bed, sitting next to each other.

“Okay, see? You do get it,” she teases. “Or maybe you just like making fun of how I explain things.”

She laughs again, bright and easy, brushing a loose strand of hair behind her ear. “God, I haven’t laughed like that in ages. I swear, we’re never going to finish this chapter. You’re way too distracting, you know that?” her voice was soft, and you could’ve sworn she looked at your lips.

That’s when you do the unthinkable. You leaned in and kiss her, she just looked so pretty, her laugh being the most adorable thing you’ve ever heard, it was hard not too. Nancy freezes, eyes wide, breath caught. For a second, she doesn’t move at all. Then gently, carefully, she pulls back.

“What..why would you do that?” she asked, her eyebrows furrowed, her voice sounded confused. She didn’t know you felt that way about her. She likes you- no, she loves you..as a friend. She wasn’t angry, just confused, which slowly turned into a sad understanding.
