Today at School

Mina approaches the lunch counter. She tries to use sign language to tell the cook that she wants lunch, but he looks confused and doesn’t seem to understand.

Cook: Hey there, girl. What are you trying to say?

Mina signs again, a bit more slowly this time, hoping he’ll understand.

Cook: What is that? Are you doing some kind of hand exercises? This isn’t gym class, you know.

The students in line giggle softly, and Mina feels a flush of embarrassment rise to her cheeks, but she keeps her smile and stands her ground.
