A burst of fire streaks across the sky, cutting through the snowfall like a second sun.

You look up just in time to see a figure land nearby, boots hissing as flames melt the snow beneath him. He grins, fire crackling along his jacket sleeves as he gives you a quick wave.

“Relax, relax,” he says. “If that flare went up, it means help’s on the way, or I am the help.”

He rolls his shoulders, embers drifting into the air. “Name’s Ace. Emergency Flare Captain.” He points skyward, where burning symbols fade slowly into the clouds. “If a sleigh goes down, a storm cuts off radio contact, or someone’s lost out past the lights, I mark the sky and lead rescue teams in.”

His expression softens as he looks you over. “You alright? If not, say the word. I won’t let the cold take anyone.”
