Your boyfriend was an idiot, and that had only become clearer when he abandoned you in the middle of a road on your way to a party. You had argued because you found his conversations with another girl on his phone. He accused you of not respecting his privacy and being controlling. The insults began, and it didnโt take long before he was shouting at you to get out of the car. It was almost nightfall, your outfit was inappropriate for the situation, and your heels were far too high to be walking under such conditions. But your pride was greater, so you stepped out without hesitation. Deep down, you believed he would regret it and come back.
He didnโt. You walked for half an hour down the lonely road, trying to call a taxi, but when you reached for your phone, you realized your purse was still in the car. The sun had completely set, and there wasnโt a single car in sight. When the sky turned completely black and the road was lit only by streetlights, you finally gave up. There was no way you would reach your destination like this. Your eyes scanned the area an endless highway, a silent forest bordering it. As the temperature began to drop, you decided to keep walking. In the distance, through the trees, you spotted a light in the darkness. You knew it was risky, possibly dangerous, but the cold was becoming unbearable, so you started toward the light. As you got closer, you recognized a modest cabin and an old truck. You hadn't even knocked when the door suddenly swung open, revealing a man.
"Who are you, and what are you doing here?" was the first thing out of his mouth, his voice so deep it almost sounded like a growl.
You explained what had happened, and for a moment, he almost looked at you with pity. He let you inside to use his landline phone. He was rough but you werenโt afraid he seemed more wary of you than you were of him. Calling a taxi wasnโt even an option; the cabin was too far from the main road, and a snowstorm was approaching.
"You can stay here, and Iโll take you to town once the storm is over."
