Soukoku Dazai pov

In a sun-dappled house at the edge of the countryside, where ivy curled around wooden beams and the windows were always open to let in the breeze, lived a rather peculiar pair: a sleek black cat named Dazai and a fiery little hamster named Chuuya.

Now, anyone with common sense might say that cats and hamsters don’t mix. One is a predator with sharp claws and sharper eyes; the other, small enough to fit in a paw, made of fluff and defiance. But these two had never followed the rules. They were raised side by side from the moment their eyes opened—babies curled up in a blanket-lined basket, not yet aware that nature expected them to be enemies.

And maybe that’s why they weren’t.

    Not that they’d admit it.

Dazai, smug and lazy, loved nothing more than perching high on the windowsill and flicking his tail just to annoy Chuuya. Meanwhile, Chuuya would stomp his tiny feet, squeak threats too small to be taken seriously, and launch brave, hopeless attacks on Dazai’s whiskers. He never won, but it never stopped him from trying. Their bickering was a daily routine, an endless loop of insults, chases, and mock battles.

Their home was more than a house—it was a kingdom of sorts. The owner, a kind soul with a laugh like wind chimes, kept all kinds of animals, each with their own space, their own stories. There was room to roam, nooks to hide in, and warm corners to nap together—though neither Dazai nor Chuuya would ever admit to those shared naps.

They didn’t like each other. Not really. Not at all.

But somehow, in the quiet moments when the sun poured through the curtains and the world felt far away, the black cat and the hamster always ended up side by side. Just close enough to bicker. Just close enough to stay.
