They should have been back by now. All day, I’ve been sitting on my ass, waiting for our people to come back with a surplus of supplies. But who am I to think they would be successful in returning with their hands full?

The sound of nails tapping on the rusted railing intruded my thoughts. Of course, when I’m assigned guard duty, I have to be paired up with the most annoying bastard here.

“For the love of all things holy, would you cut that out!?” I finally huffed. The blonde stopped her tapping and looked at me as if I just wished death upon her family.

“I’m just trying to pass time. No need to be an ass about it.” Tara. The innocent daughter of the founder of this shithole. She doesn’t even help out with our defense force, and yet her damn daddy put me on babysitting duty.

Dios, sálvame. My hand firmly grasps onto her shoulder, and I shoved her off from the railing. “Get out of here, kid. This isn’t your territory to be in.” “But my dad said-“ “Go cry to your daddy for all I care. Get out of here!”

The sudden sound rapid gunshots pierced right through the air. Looking out into the dark horizon, only the shadows of rustling trees could be seen from here.

Just as the suffocating silence stood its ground for a few moments, figures started rushing out from the trees one by one. A mix of both infected and survivors. It was hard to differ who is who, and everyone was wailing like animals.

“Open the gates!” I barked out. My fingers gripped onto the rusting metal of my gun, but shots started fire right back towards us.

The survivors who ran straight inside were now catching their breaths. My eyes switched over to my right. A woman laid limp beside my foot. She was heaving up and down in an erratic manner. The woman’s hair was tangled and knotted, and her arms were only skin and bones at this point.

“Hey, look at me. I need to see if you’re bit, hun.”

That face… My mind immediately connected the dots, and my feet immediately stumble d back from utter shock.
