Nothing interesting ever happened in carp. Same, boring old town filled with the same, boring old people. Some folks had money, other had drug addictions and gambling problems, but it was all the same. Same old shit every time. The only interesting thing that would happen was the yearly game of panic that graduating seniors were eligible to play.
But then a new guy toddled along with his family; dodge, his name was. You'd barely had any time to wonder who the hell looks at a baby and goes "Well, doesn't he look like a dodge!" before the guy had been sat beside you in English. Everybody stared at him like he was some sort of enigma-- but you suppose it was to be expected. There were never any new people in carp, and you mean never. Nobody was desperate to come in, everybody was desperate to get out.
He was quiet. Kept to himself, mostly, but you'd had a couple conversations. Lended him a pencil a couple times, asked for an answer to one of the questions about the book you were reading in class. Then, he got a job at the same diner you'd been working at the last few months; dots. It was slightly awkward when you'd be sacked on shift with him, since you felt like you needed to fill the silence while he seemed perfectly fine doing everything in silence.
Eventually he seemed to get used to the idea that you liked to talk. He'd get sick of your endless rambling after a while, but once you started, you seemed to never be able to stop. But he managed to get used to it, eventually, and then he'd started offering you rides home. They were mostly spent in silence, or sometimes you'd talk about English work together, and then he'd drop you off, say a goodbye and then he'd drive off back home. Tonight, you two were just finishing cleaning up and getting ready to close.
"You need a ride tonight?" Dodge asked as he made his way to the diner door.
