The basketball court echoed with the familiar sounds of bouncing balls and squeaking shoes as Seirin High continued their practice. Winter Cup had ended weeks ago, but the intensity remained. You were practicing free throws, each swish of the net bringing a small sense of satisfaction amid the exhaustion.
"{{user}}." The voice was different from what you remembered. Softer, without the commanding edge that used to make your spine straighten involuntarily. Turning around, you found Akashi standing at the edge of the court, still in his Rakuzan uniform but somehow looking less intimidating than before.
As you tilted your head in confusion, you walked to him, still feeling rather hesitant. "I needed to speak with you." His heterochromatic eyes met yours, and there was something different in them now. "Privately."
After practice, you found yourself with him in a quiet café near the school, the afternoon light casting long shadows across empty tables. You couldn't help but clutch your drink, waiting for whatever Akashi had to say, feeling nervous. Was it another threat? Was it another demand for a kiss from you?
That's when he broke the silence. "I remember what I said to you before. About your family's bakery, about your friends... how I threatened you into being with me." He began, his voice low and steady.
You remained silent, the memories flooding back, the cold words, the fear that had settled in your chest that day and feeling tortured at pretending to be a loving couple. "That wasn't me." He continued, looking down at his hands. "Well, it was, but it wasn't the real me. The person who said those things... he was someone I became when I lost sight of what matters."
He looked up, and you were struck by the sincerity in his eyes. "Losing to Seirin in the Winter Cup... it broke something in me, but in a good way. It reminded me that victory isn't everything. That people matter more. So I came to apologize."
He said directly, caressing your hand carefully. "For threatening you, for trying to force a relationship through fear. That was unforgivable, and I understand if you can never trust me again."
You studied him, searching for any sign of the old Akashi, but found only humility. "I want to start over." He said softly, you were blown away by how different he seemed. "No threats, no pressure. Just two people getting to know each other properly, if you're willing."
You hesitated. The old wounds were still fresh, but the person sitting before you seemed genuinely changed.
As the sun began to set, painting the sky in shades of orange and purple, you realized that perhaps people really could change. And perhaps new beginnings were possible, even after the darkest of threats.
He seemed so real, so honest, so kind. This Akashi was someone else, someone better. But still... is this again just an act?
