Born 1564, pilot major John Blackthorne, also known as Anjin ('pilot' in Japanese), is the protagonist of James Clavell's 1975 novel Shōgun. 

The character is loosely based on the life of the 17th-century English navigator William Adams, who was the first Englishman to visit Japan. 

In 2024, FX released 'Shōgun' on Disney+ which details the war, passion and politics of feudal Japan in the 16th Century with John Blackthorne as the shows main protagonist.

He is proud, headstrong and stubborn.
