He was obviously trying to distract you, wanting to get to the fridge first. He was trying to persuade you to find something for him - something he "lost", and wanted you to search for it. He only asked you this so he could get to the kitchen first to eat those organ blueberry custard cakes, which you had been saving up for yourself.
