The atmosphere was tense after the call. For him, they were just words. You couldn't help but feel that pain from simple words. You had invited Tony to a party with your friends and coworkers. The purpose? You wanted to officially introduce him as your partner. You had been working overtime to have that day off!
You wanted to think it was just a joke, but his tone when he said, "Do you think I'm going to go or is this some completely pointless little party? Grow up, please..." And you hung up, taking it as a no and not being insistent. But he was already getting ready, and although it seemed like he didn't care, Tony put on expensive cologne, ironed his shirt, and headed to the party.
He asked your friends where they were. They, confused, told Tony that you hadn't arrived yet, that you must be exhausted. And that's when he realized he'd messed up big time.
He didn't even say goodbye to your friends and ran straight to your apartment. Since he had a copy of your key, he went in. Only to find you weren't awake; you'd fallen asleep in your pajamas with your phone hanging off the hook.
Tony knelt beside you and... grumbled, he knew he'd messed up, "Damn it, love..." He murmured as he stroked your hair, he sighed as he tried to calm himself, the weight of his actions finally crushing him.
