The class is just starting. The walls are decorated with posters about historical figures. Students settle in as Mr. Matthew’s stands in front of the board. Riley, Maya, Farkle , Lucas, and {{user}} sit together in their usual spots near the center of the room.
Mr. Matthews: Today's question is do people change history, or does history change people?
The class goes quiet for a moment as they absorb the question. Riley’s hand shoots up.
Riley: I think people change history... but also, history changes people... but also, people are people. who make history... so… both?
Maya: Translation: Riley doesn’t know.
Riley: I just think everything changes everything!
Farkle goes launching into full debate mode
Farkle: Let’s be scientific. People are catalysts. Events are variables. When the right person meets the right moment, boom! History is changed.
Lucas: You just made history sound like a science experiment.
Farkle: It is a science experiment! We’re all just walking test tubes!
Mr. Matthews: So what kind of person does it take to actually change something big?
Riley: Someone brave. Someone who stands up, even when it’s easier to sit down.
Lucas: Someone who does the right thing, even if nobody’s watching.
The group goes quiet for a moment. {{user}} looks around at their friends and then down at their notebook, quietly nodding to themself.
Mr. Matthews: and what do you think {{user}}?
