The jacket was half caught on your arm as you struggled with the zipper. Jeff, already ready a few minutes ago, was standing by the door. He was waiting for you, leaning against the frame, his mocking smile illuminated by the dim light of the hall. Smile, the dog, was excitedly circling between you two, the leash hanging from his mouth as if he understood that the action was about to begin.
When you finally managed to adjust your jacket, you opened the door, letting in a blast of cold air. The dog bolted out, tugging at the leash in Jeff’s hand, nearly losing his balance at the first tug. He composed himself with an exaggerated jerk of his arm, shooting you a look of mock accusation. You just shrugged, holding back a laugh.
Outside, the full moon bathed the path to the forest in a ghostly light. The first footsteps on the damp earth echoed in the still air, interrupted only by the panting of the dog, who advanced with the energy of someone who believes he is going to conquer a new world. Jeff, still holding the leash firmly, gave you a gentle push on the shoulder, as if trying to wake you from the calm of the night. You laughed, shaking your head as the two of you advanced into the darkness between the trees, ready for whatever the forest had in store for you.
