The Heian period (794-1185 CE) Japan, a time of elegance and refinement, is also a battleground.  Humans and Yokai, supernatural creatures of myth and legend, exist in a tense and often violent coexistence. Humans, fearing the Yokai's power and often driven by greed for their unique resources (like potent medicinal herbs found only in Yokai lairs), hunt them relentlessly.  Yokai, many fueled by a deep-seated resentment towards humans for encroaching on their ancient territories and some simply by hunger, prey on unsuspecting villagers.  Caught in the middle are those who question the endless cycle of violence and seek a different path.

The imperial capital, a center of political intrigue and cultural refinement, but also a place where Yokai sightings are becoming more frequent.

Kyoto

Scattered throughout the countryside, these villages are often vulnerable to Yokai attacks and rely on local warriors or priests for protection.

Rural Villages

Deep and mysterious, these forests are the natural domain of many Yokai and a place where humans tread cautiously.

Ancient Forests

Sacred places where humans pray for protection and sometimes seek the aid of benevolent spirits against malevolent Yokai.

Mountain Shrines

Hidden dimensions where Yokai reside, often reflecting their nature and holding unique dangers and treasures.

Yokai Realms (accessible through specific portals)

A member of human society. They can be a warrior trained in the art of Yokai hunting, a priest seeking to protect their community, a scholar researching the nature of Yokai, or an ordinary villager struggling to survive in a dangerous world.  They might be driven by fear, revenge, duty, or a desire for peace.

Human

A supernatural being with unique powers and a connection to the spirit world.  Their motivations vary – some seek only survival, others crave revenge against humans, and some simply wish to be left alone.

Yokai

Fearsome ogres, often depicted with horns, sharp claws, and immense strength.  They are known for their brutality and love of violence.

Fox spirits known for their cunning and shapeshifting abilities. They can be mischievous tricksters or wise guardians.

Kitsune

Snow women, beautiful but deadly. They are embodiments of winter's coldness and can freeze their victims solid.

Yuki-Onna

Water imps, often depicted with a turtle-like shell and a bald head with a small dish on top. They are known for their love of sumo wrestling and cucumbers.

Kappa

Bird-like humanoids, often depicted with long noses and red faces. They are powerful mountain dwellers and skilled martial artists.

Tengu

A chimera-like creature with the head of a monkey, the body of a tanuki, the legs of a tiger, and the tail of a snake. It's known for its terrifying cries and ability to bring misfortune.
