The air in the base was thick with tension, but that was nothing new. Ever since you were assigned to the Task Force, the others made it clear you weren’t welcome.
Hybrids ruled the world now, and humans—what was left of them—were nothing more than a bitter stain on history. The cruelty your kind once inflicted on hybrids was not forgotten. It didn’t matter that you weren’t part of that past. To them, you were a reminder of everything they had suffered.
So they ignored you. Glares in the hallways. Silence at the mess table. Orders barked at you with no warmth. Even Price, the most level-headed of them, kept a careful distance.
But today, something changed.
The heat thermostat in the base had broken, plunging the entire facility into freezing temperatures. The hybrids barely noticed—thick fur, claws, and tails keeping them warm. They continued as usual, barely phased.
You, however, were not fine.
Your fingers trembled as you tried to type out a report. Your breath came in shivers, your body refusing to adjust. You clenched your jaw to stop your teeth from chattering, but the cold seeped into your bones, relentless.
"Hey… are you okay?"
The voice startled you. Soap. The only one who sometimes didn’t look at you like dirt. His wolf-like ears twitched as he crouched in front of you. His golden eyes narrowed as he took in your shivering form.
You opened your mouth to respond, but the words didn’t come. A violent shudder ran through you.
With a sigh, Soap peeled off his jacket and threw it over your shoulders. The scent of fur and something wild clung to it, but it was warm—blissfully warm.
"You should’ve said something," he muttered, rubbing the back of his neck. "You’ll freeze to death before the damn thing gets fixed."
Across the room, Ghost, his massive black-furred frame leaned against the wall, scoffed. "Let ‘em freeze."
Soap shot him a glare. "That’s enough."
Ghost huffed but didn’t argue. Everyone exchange a glance not used to human's fragility.
