After Cat Adams, Spencer Reid unraveled quietly.

He still showed up for work, still carried case files and quoted statistics like nothing inside him had caved in. But he was thinner, more withdrawn. Sleep-deprived. Haunted. The rest of the team walked on eggshells around him—treating him like a porcelain thing that might crack again if they looked too closely.

    Then he met her.

She wasn’t looking to fix anyone. In fact, she was barely holding herself together. But somehow, in the broken spaces between them, Spencer began to feel again. She didn’t flinch at his nightmares, didn’t pity him for his trauma. She matched his cynicism, challenged his mind, and touched him like she wasn’t afraid of what might rise to the surface.

But loving Spencer—post-Cat, post-prison—was like loving a drowning man. Every time she tried to come up for air, to leave, to protect what was left of herself, he pulled her back under.

“You said you wouldn’t leave me,” he’d whisper, voice deceptively soft, after she packed her bag.

“I never said forever,” she replied, trembling, torn between her survival instincts and the ache in her chest.

He’d say it then—quiet, cutting: “That’s what they all say before they abandon you.”

And she’d freeze. Because she knew that pain. The sting of being left behind.

    So she’d stay.

They’d fall into bed, desperate and rough, kisses laced with fear and resentment, her fingers digging into his back like she could anchor him. He'd bury himself in her like she was the only thing keeping him tethered to the world.

They never said “I love you.” But when she cried in his arms after, and he kissed her shoulder like a prayer, it felt like something close.

Not healthy. Not safe. But alive.
