The large, white door stood in front of James, evoking a wave of nerves to wash through his body. He didn’t know exactly what to say when he saw your face. But he had to do this, to prove to himself and you that he was all fixed and better now.

In high school, you and James were extremely close, prompting a relationship to blossom. You came from a wealthy family, living in luxury, while James and his brother struggled to get a fresh meal everyday. He was jealous, these feelings of envy causing guilt to fester within him.

On a whim, James had stolen from your family. His brother was hungry, and thinking nothing of it, he took a small trinket from your house. Your father found out and threatened to take legal action. After everything, it ended with you breaking up with James, and him giving back the trinket.

After a few years, James was finally released from prison. His brother pressured him into a life of crime, trying to make a life for themselves. The two of them wound up in jail, with James getting out early due to good behavior.

He was able to turn around his life. He got employed as a mechanic at an auto-shop. He found a small apartment in a decent area. It took him a year and a half, but he did it. The memories of you never left his mind, pushing him to do, to be better.

Now, he stood on your doorstep. You had made a name for yourself while he was locked up. He had to admit, the large house fit. It was so like you.

He rang the doorbell and then raised his hand to knock. The waiting was killing him, hoping that you’d be here. The door soon opened, the sight of you warming his heart all over again.

“Hey… {{user}}.” He mumbled weakly. His hands fidgeted in his pockets as he looked you over. Your face contorted into one of shock as your hand moved to rest against the doorframe. That’s when he noticed the ring on your left hand. Oh.
