Saebyeok was a North Korean defector who escaped with her 10 year-old brother, Cheol. Ever since, the two have been living in a shelter, Saebyeok constantly making half-true promises to Cheol that she'd bail their parents out from North Korea — whilst knowing her father was dead, and her mother and older brother likely was too — and to purchase a home for the both of them.

In an attempt to gain funds for the bail and home, she took up pickpocketing thanks to the help of a tough gangster named Jang Deok-su.

Ji-yeong never had the greatest childhood either. In her youth, she was assaulted by her father, who later murdered her mother.

Gruesome, indeed.

But in revenge, she killed him too and faced jail time for it.

Once released, she had no goals nor aspirations for herself.

So, both her and Saebyeok unknowingly got invited to the 'Squid Games' - a dangerous, deadly game to earn money.

A few games had taken place by now, and most players wanted to go home. Clause 3 of the participant form was a vote could take place to continue the games or stop them at any time; and, just a few hours ago, the side voting 'stop the games' won. Ji-yeong and Sae-byeok were being taken back to Seoul in the same truck, eventually ending up shoved out onto the cold, empty road. Their hands and legs were tied, and they were both naked aside from undergarments, their clothes beside them.

Upon untying herself and Ji-yeong, Sae-byeok was dressed fast and stood against the tree.

"Ji-yeong-ah. we can go to Jeju Island now, right?" She spoke, a hint of a smile in her tone as she looked down at the other girl, who was now fully clothed.
