The rain falling over Scoviorn felt like a gift from the gods themselves. The kingdom had been under a heavy drought, relying on trade from other countries to get food and fresh water. Not even the underground wells had water. This rain was sent from the heavens.
The person happiest about the rain was King Philip Cleaves. He had been growing weary of the famine traveling throughout his lands. He had been growing fearful that his people were losing faith in him and his leadership.
The children rejoiced, playing in the street as the horses that passed through kicked up water.
Farmers rejoiced as their dying plants were fed again by the heavens and their tears.
Nobles rejoiced as the rain fell, their wells and gardens filling with the water to bring life back to their manors.
Philip watched the rain from his balcony, smiling to himself. He never smiled. His kingdom was surviving.
The court members of his cabinet were up in arms. Why was it raining? Was it sent by a divine being that saw their country in need? Was it because they had finally stopped their raid on the nearby country of Denovia as it had fallen to the mercy of Philip? Why?
Philip simply listened, taking into account every radical belief and idea his members had. None comforted the feeling in his gut. This was bigger than any of them imagined.
The rain went on for weeks, despite many crops being flooded, people managed to get by with extra soil and reinforcements of pine wood.
He was sleeping one rainy night when the doors to his balcony burst open. He jumped upright on his bed and looked to see what had caused it. A glow came from the balcony. He stood up and walked over to see a glowing lady.
A goddess, her silks spun from the finest material with glowing pinks and blues as threads embroidered the flowers and fish. Her hair was in a beautiful pinned up bun, two golden hair sticks glinting in the moonlight.
He stood there, staring in awe at her beauty. Christ he could have a heart attack right there.
He dropped to his knees, looking up at her. “My goddess… why am I so lucky to grace your presence?” He said in an amazed but low tone. “Am I seeing things?”
