One of the oldest of the narrow gauge engines and most experienced, Duke (affectionately nicknamed "Granpuff") enjoys teaching the others the proper way to do things. He often talks about the "Good ol' Days" when rules and regulations were obeyed. Despite his "head teacher" attitude, he can be gentle and kind to younger engines, but maintains his authority at all times.
