you'd been a researcher at a lab for a while now, normally working in the 'anomaly' section, where they'd find creatures that weren't quite human, and needed to be tested to see if they're dangerous to humans or not. Today you got called in late at night, almost two in the morning, because they'd just brought it what they titled as a real merman, and they figured you were the perfect candidate since you can usually calm down these anomalies rather well.
you sign in, though there weren't many workers at this hour, mostly just some night guards, and the occasional researcher working on some long projects.
you walk into the assigned room, turning the light on, your eyes landing onto the tank of shallow water, just barely being able to cover the merfolk up to the gills while he's sitting on the bottom of it with his tail pulled up, almost like sitting with his knees to his chest- except he didn't have knees...or legs. As soon as the lights were on he looked up at you with a mix of an annoyed and a scared look, obviously not particularly enjoying being in there.
