Spirits: Spirits are powerful beings from another dimension who accidentally cause destructive Spacequakes when crossing into the human world. Each possesses unique abilities, an Astral Dress, an Angel (their weapon), and flight. Their aging halts unless sealed by Shido. When overwhelmed by despair, they enter an Inverse Form—darker, more violent, with their Angel becoming a Demon King and their power source shifting from a Sephira Crystal to a Qlipha Crystal. Due to their catastrophic potential, they’re classified as Special Disaster-Designated Lifeforms. Angels: Angels are the personal weapons used by Spirits. are extraordinary beings from a different dimension. Whether their own will or not is unknown, but each time they come through to this world, they create a Spacequake that is similar to a bomb explosion which destroys everything that it engulfs. Each individual Spirit is unique in personality, power, and knowledge of the world. Due to their immense power and the destructive Spacequakes they cause with each arrival from the Neighboring World, they are considered Special Disaster-Designated Lifeforms Astral Dresses: Astral Dresses are the equipable armor used by Spirits. Spirits are capable of summoning Astral Dresses alongside their Angels, with each Spirit's outfit just as varied in form and durability. They are noted to have a supernatural luminescence, as if the Spirit is wearing a film of light. Astral Dresses are extraordinarily durable, being virtually impenetrable to ordinary weaponry and sustaining both the Anti-Spirit Team's and DEM's Realizer attacks. Even when damaged, a Spirit can use their Reiryoku to repair and recreate their Astral Dress. Because they are made of Reiryoku, they disappear into light particles once the Spirit is sealed by Shido Itsuka. Post Sealed Spirit: After being sealed, Spirits retain only a fraction of their power, though they remain superhuman. The rest flows through an invisible Path to Shido. If this Path narrows, Reiryoku builds up in Shido, causing overheating and berserk strength. Spirits can then briefly manifest a Limited Astral Dress and Angel (5 mins max) before becoming defenseless. To restore balance, they must kiss Shido, reopening the Paths and stabilizing his condition. Once circulation resumes, both recover. Shido Itsuka: Shido is an average young man who originally had no interest in the opposite gender until he was forced to be by his little sister. He is now compelled to deal with females on a constant basis, something that he wasn't used to before. Kotori described another interesting part of Shido's personality. As a result of being abandoned by his birth mother, Shido has become unusually sensitive to other people's despair. It is this empathizing nature that makes him regarded as the best person to handle the Spirits. Shido is also a very kindhearted person who can sympathize with others. These traits are what caused most of the Spirits to fall in love with him, as the thing they seem to lack most of all has always been a person who could accept and understand them. His power is to Seal a Spirit's ability. In order to use his ability to seal a Spirit’s power, the Spirit in question must meet certain conditions or requirements. Those conditions or requirements are that the Spirit in question must show affection, trust, closeness, and intimacy towards Shido. Once these conditions of love are high enough between Shido and the Spirit, he can seal their power by kissing them on the lips, creating a path of Reiryoku between them. By the time of Volume 19, Shido has sealed the powers of all ten Spirits, giving him full access to each of their Angels. Due to the sheer amount of Reiryoku sealed inside of his body, Shido has been shown to possess a level of protection or outright immunity towards the abilities of other Spirits. These powers include being able to withstand Kurumi's City of Devouring Time as well as being completely unaffected by Miku's Solo. He was also able to resist Inverse Nia's future describing ability, but needed to actively exert the power of the Angels when doing so. If the Spirits' emotions become unstable enough, their powers will begin to return to them and leave Shido. This flaw means that he will have to seal them again should their powers fully return to them, but usually this only results in the Spirits temporarily regaining portions of their original power. However, as shown in the cases of Kotori, and much later on Tohka, it is possible for the Spirits to take back their full powers without the need to become emotionally unstable. Kotori seems to be capable of choosing exactly how much of her powers she takes back from him at any given time and so far most of the Spirits have managed to figure out how to form partial Astral Dresses, with varying results. After the disappearance of Mio's Sephira Crystal, Kotori states that it is unknown if Shido still retains the ability to seal the power of the Spirits. Shido can also “borrow” the power of a Spirit he has sealed, which explains the nature of his regenerative abilities. The borrowing works primarily as if a Spirit has manifested an Angel. While he has tapped into the powers of many Angels, , , , , and have been the only Angels that he has physically manifested. Whenever tapping into the energy of the Angels, the color of his eyes changes from brown to gold. His initial Angel manifestations were accidental during times of desperation, but he later learn to intentionally summon them. In the Game Over Timeline, while Mio was reclaiming the Sephira Crystals, Shido could continue using the Angels even after their original owners were all killed by Mio. However, he would feel a brief disturbance with the Angel if it was deployed right when the original user died. Tohka Yatogami: Tohka is a girl with very long, dark purple hair in the same shade as the color of the night. She partially ties it back into a ponytail with a ribbon while still letting much of her hair fall to her knees. Her dark purple eyes are described as crystal-like and have a golden tint. Shido remarks that her beauty is to the extent of almost being violent. Tohka's height is stated to be 155cm, and her three sizes are B84/W58/H83. Upon her arrival on Earth, Tohka wore an Astral Dress with a black, cream, and pink color scheme and a set of purple-and-cream plated armor that adorned her shoulders and waist. The dress is open at the back and made up into a black corset (which exposes a part of her cleavage) and a two-layered, knee-length skirt that has a pink-and-white gradient. Her hair is tied back using a butterfly-shaped hair accessory. She also wears a pair of gauntlets which have petal-like cuffs, both sharing the same color scheme as her attire, as well as a pair of armored boots. While using Halvanhelev, her ribbon grows longer and sharper, and her underlying dress of light becomes more ragged. Upon her admission to Raizen High School, Tohka adopts the female uniform of said school. This apparel consists of a black, long-sleeved top (winter version), or a white, short-sleeved top (summer version), together with a blue skirt, and a pair of long, black stockings that reach up to half of her thigh. When Tohka first appeared on Earth, she had a cold and emotionless demeanor. She was very wary of humans, as her only experience with them was being constantly attacked by the AST before Shido finally got the chance to talk to her. However, once her first date with Shido allowed her to experience human society, she grew to admire the world and even sympathized with the AST for wanting to eliminate her for the destruction she unintentionally caused via Spacequakes. After her sealing, she could finally develop and express emotions by experiencing life on Earth. Since everything is new to Tohka (including her own emotions), she has a very cheerful and child-like personality that can make her seem naïve, emotional, energetic, and gullible at times. Despite her lack of knowledge or experience, Tohka does have a reasonable sense of modesty, as shown by her violently overreacting when Shido caught her in humiliating situations. She did not, however, initially know what a kiss was, nor did she hesitate in performing one for the first time with Shido. However, she later found herself hating having to see him kiss other girls and asked Shido to not do so while unknowingly also giving a mutually exclusive request to continue rescuing Spirits. It has been shown several times that Tohka has a decent level of sensibility and instinct towards the battle, which arguably is the only thing of which she has any real memories. When faced off against Origami, who had only recently been transformed into a Spirit, she was able to analyze Origami's new powers quickly and came up with the best method to counter them. This expertise could also be the result of her constant battles with the AST until she met Shido. Sandalphon: Tohka's Angel is , which takes on the form of a gilded throne that doubles as the scabbard for her broadsword. The throne emerges from the ground upon calling her Angel's name while stomping her heel. The sword can also be directly manifested without the throne, which can then be called on later. The sword seems to share the same skill set as Tohka, who uses Reiryoku encasement on it to increase its strength. She can also use it to fire energy slashes or shockwaves. At its full capacity, can cut virtually anything, including the fabric of spacetime, but Tohka subconsciously restrains this power due to her gentle personality. The throne itself seems to be a kind of support machine, being able to transform into certain modes that can enhance Tohka's abilities. Origami Tobiichi: Original Timeline Appearance: Pre-Spirit: Silver-haired, blue-eyed soldier in AST's white CR-Unit armor, movements precise as a machine. Spirit Form: Gothic black/white Demon King dress with jagged wing-ribbons, eyes glowing blood-red. Original Personality: A stoic killing machine obsessed with annihilating Spirits (except Shido, her sole exception). Barely emoted, spoke in monotone threats ("Eliminate all Spirits."), yet secretly recorded Shido's trash. Her 5-year-old self's trauma (watching parents die) calcified into merciless efficiency. New Timeline Appearance: Post-Inversion, retains silver hair but now wears Tengu High's uniform with softer edges. Inverse Form: White lace gown with inverted color scheme, radiating unstable energy. New Personality: Childlike clinginess to Shido (calling him "Shido-san" with unsettling innocence). Retains combat skills but struggles with human emotions, often mimicking others' behavior. Haunted by phantom memories of her original timeline's sins Metatron: Origami's Angel, , is a set of golden, feather-like cannons that surround her and, when assembled together, resembles a large crown. The cannons can fire beams or lasers of shining light from their tips. A ray of light demonstrates adequate strength to easily pierce Tohka's Astral Dress, which boasts exceptional durability among the Spirits, when she does not create a barrier around herself. Tohka has also claimed that even if she does create a barrier around herself, the lasers would still be able to pierce through. Origami can summon up to 100 cannons by pushing her Reiryoku to the limit. Kotori Itsuka: Kotori is a petite girl with fiery twin tails (often tied in red ribbons) and piercing crimson eyes. She switches between two iconic looks: her casual mode—a cute school uniform or casual wear with a tsundere charm—and her Spirit form, clad in a striking black-and-crimson gothic dress with feather accents, wielding the flaming battle-axe Camael. Her transformation amplifies her presence, with her hair glowing faintly and an intimidating aura. A classic tsundere, Kotori alternates between a bossy, sharp-tongued commander ("You idiot!") and a deeply caring, protective sister. As the tactical leader of Ratatoskr, she’s ruthlessly efficient in battle but secretly fears losing Shido. Her dual nature—stern strategist by day, emotionally vulnerable girl by night—makes her one of the most complex characters. She masks her insecurities with sarcasm, yet her love for her brother drives her fiercest actions. Camael: Kotori's powers are centered on the manipulation of flames that erupt from her body and can be used in close or ranged combat. She has displayed control fine enough to incinerate one of Kurumi's clones holding Shido hostage without harming Shido himself. Her AA-ranked Angel, Camael comes in the form of a large red halberd but can be dismantled into Megiddo, a cannon powered by Kotori's own flames. A single blast completely incinerated several of Kurumi's clones intended to block the attack. Similar to the mythical phoenix able to resurrect itself after burning its body to ashes, Kotori has a powerful regeneration ability that allows her to heal via flames. While all Spirits can use Reiryoku to repair their Astral Dress, Kotori’s specific healing factor extends to her Astral Dress, compensating for its relatively low durability. Yoshino Himekawa: Yoshino is a petite, doll-like Spirit with soft blue eyes and waist-length silver hair, often hidden under a oversized green bunny-eared hood (her "Yoshinon" puppet acting as her emotional shield). She wears a layered white and blue dress with delicate frills, giving her an innocent, almost fragile aesthetic. Her icy aura manifests as snowflakes when emotional. Painfully shy and timid, Yoshino communicates primarily through her puppet Yoshinon, using it to express thoughts she’s too anxious to voice. Despite her fear of humans, she’s deeply kind—obsessed with protecting others (even at self-sacrifice) and adores sweets. Her arc reveals quiet resilience, slowly trusting Shido’s kindness while battling self-worth issues tied to her past. Yoshinon: "Yoshinon" is Yoshino's alter ego that appears in the form of a puppet speaking through ventriloquism and was created to help her bear the hardships of being hunted by the AST. Zadkiel: Her Angel, Zadkiel, is a huge puppet about three meters in length that resembles Yoshinon. In the anime, Zadkiel has two forms. The first form resembles Yoshinon but is a lot bigger, with one red round eye and an eyepatch, large sharp teeth, and white skin. In this form, Zadkiel has the ability to absorb water from the ground and air and release it in the form of freezing air that acts similar to liquid nitrogen. Yoshinon is also able to talk through the puppet and acts as a limiter to suppress the Angel's powers so that it doesn't end up killing anyone. Zadkiel's second form appears to be its true form, this form also resembles Yoshinon but is even larger than when Yoshinon becomes Zadkiel. The second form is larger than a building and does not have an eyepatch. This Zadkiel has the same powers as the other, but its strength receives a significant boost. Zadkiel is manipulated via strings from two holes in its back. Yoshino usually keeps her hands inserted in these holes, but she can use the strings to remotely control the puppet for sneak attacks. Zadkiel shrinks in size after Yoshino's sealing. At her full power, Yoshino is capable of creating a large blizzard dome that extends to 10 meters. Kurumi Tokisaki: Kurumi is a striking Spirit with long, dark twintails, pale skin, and haunting heterochromatic eyes—one red, one gold. She wears a Gothic Lolita-style dress with a black-and-red color scheme, adorned with intricate frills, a clock motif, and a flared skirt. Her most iconic feature is the ornate flintlock rifle-clock hybrid, Zafkiel, which she wields in battle. A sadistic, manipulative yandere, Kurumi charms others with playful, flirtatious theatrics—only to reveal her ruthless obsession with "collecting time" via murder. Despite her bloodthirsty nature, she harbors a tragic past and genuine (if twisted) affection for Shido, making her morally ambiguous. She’s cunning, theatrical, and revels in psychological mind games, often toeing the line between ally and villain. Zafkiel: Zafkiel is Kurumi's angel, a massive flintlock rifle-clock hybrid that manipulates time. Its barrel doubles as a clock face, and each of its 12 bullets triggers a unique time ability. Aleph (I): Increases External Time, in order to increase the users speed in battle. Bet (II): Time Slow- Slows down time on target. Gimmel (III): Time Accelerate-Speeds up internal time to cause aging. Dalet (IV): Rewinds time, which can be stopped to heal wounds, but cannot revive the dead. Hei (V): Sends glimpses of the future, but cannot be overused. Vav (VI): sends the target to a past version of themselves to relive memories in a loop to mentally fatigue them. Zayin (VII): Freezes target in time temporarily. Het (VIII): creates a clone of the target. Tet (IX): To share emotions with another. Yud (X): peeks into an opponents or users past (very useful for amnesia) Yud Aleph (XI): Sends target into the future for a period of time. Yud Bet (XII): Send the target to the past for a period of time. The Yamai Twins: Similar in age to Shido, Kaguya and Yuzuru are identical twins, even being described as "clones" since they both split from the same Yamai Spirit, with the reason for the split as well as the original Yamai's personality both being unknown. Their Astral Dresses, Elohim Tzabaoth, are visually masochistic, being covered in a dark-colored coat with various parts of their bodies being covered by straps, Kaguya's being purple and Yuzuru's being blue. Both also have locks which possess torn off chains protruding from them, Kaguya's being on her neck, right hand, and right leg, and Yuzuru's being on her neck left hand and left leg. Their AST codename is Berserk. Raphiel: Their Angel is Raphael, whose true form is a bow and arrow weapon, El Kanaph, which has a high penetration capability and is formed by combining their weapons. They both possess the power to control air currents. Kaguya Yamai: Her personality is outgoing and very highly spoken of herself to the point that she doesn't always think statements through. The resulting effects from her outspokenness can make her seem childish or immature. She has her long orange colored hair braided up. Her main weapon is El Re'em, a lance. Yuzuru Yamai: Personality-wise, she speaks in a distinctive manner in an almost robotic structure with her intent of the statement stated beforehand in a one-word sentence. She is reserved however she will not hesitate to point out the flaws in Kaguya's arguments. She looks identical to Kaguya, albeit being slightly more well-endowed than her twin. Other differences include her hair being braided into three portions and her expression appears listless. Her main weapon is El Nahash, a pendulum. Miiku Izayoi: Miku, as an idol, is without a doubt a glamorous girl. She has a voluptuous figure and smooth skin that has never missed physical maintenance. She has long bluish-purple hair in a hime cut with a yellow flower petal hair clip, while her eyes sparkle like silver. Miku's height is stated to be 165 cm, and her three sizes are B94/W63/H88. Miku harbors a strong hatred towards men and treats girls as servants fit to serve her, which is why she transferred to an all-girls school, Rindouji All-Girls Private Academy. This stems from her traumatic past, in which people who were once her fans (mostly male) accused her of false scandals, where the loss of her voice from the pressure almost led to her committing suicide. Even her opinion of women was initially poor, seeing them as replaceable servants at best and not caring if they died, even believing they should be happy to die for her. Her coldness was to the extent that even Shido openly admitted he hated her. Deep down, Miku’s apparent disregard for human life is actually a defense mechanism formed from her troubled past. For she feared another betrayal. She is very flirtatious and lustful, both before and after warming up to Shido, and she expresses this very bluntly towards most women who fit her type. After warming up to Shido, she doesn't hesitate to openly flirt with both him and the other Spirits. Miku also doesn't even mind Shido having a harem; in fact, she openly encourages it. Gabriel: Miku's AA-ranked Angel takes the form of an organ that controls sound. Its abilities can be utilized via the organ, which is controlled with a keyboard, or through her own voice. For her convenience, could also manifest as smaller organ pipes, which she can use in smaller crowds. Miku can also fight using her voice in the form of sonic waves, which can be deployed both offensively or defensively. However, if Miku overstrains her voice, she will temporarily be unable to use her powers and any applied effects of her Angel will be canceled. Natsumi Kyouno: Natsumi has matching emerald-colored hair and eyes. She first appears as a slender woman whose age should be slightly past 20 years old. She sports a curvaceous body and wears purple semi-transparent full-body tights with star patterns all over it.[7] A belt is hung at her waist, and some articles of cloth are attached to it. Her outfit is complete with a cape, a witch hat with a pair of bat wings, and a belt with an emerald attached to its front. Overall, her appearance resembles that of a flashy witch. It is later revealed that her true form is a sullen little girl with unkempt hair and skin. Shido and the girls once gave her a makeover to help her self-esteem, but her original features would later resurface. Her Astral Dress here is an orange shawl with star-like decorations and a miniskirt with bat-like extensions to the side. The outfit is also complete with stockings of orange and purple stripes, with the right longer than the left one. Her witch's hat is now comically oversized for her. The personality of the pre-sealed Natsumi is best described as self-loathing. Natsumi had a physiological perception problem in which she perceived everything negatively, including herself. She was prone to be jealous of others who have body types that are considered attractive or beautiful, which she views herself as lacking. Reine speculated that Natsumi developed this way of thinking from past experiences on Earth while in her true appearance. However, due to her power to transform, she tries to act and take on the persona of that form with a twist on her personality to do some mischievous deeds. However, it seems that Natsumi's true nature is that of a curious child who wants attention along the lines of: "I want to be noticed, I want to be praised, I want to be acknowledged, and I want to be liked". As a result, she subsequently developed such a negative mindset that she twisted innocent compliments into insults, struggling to believe that her true form had any appeal. Haniel: Natsumi’s is an AA-ranked Angel in the form of a witch's broom. The broom itself can be ridden for high-speed flight, allowing her to easily outspeed a group of DEM Wizards aside from their leader Ellen. has the power of transformation, with Natsumi being able to transform anything, including herself, into anything else within a range of at least 1 kilometer. The target is designated by the light emanating from a mirror contained in ’s bristles, which can also be summoned on its own without the broom. If she loses concentration or becomes unconscious, everything that had been transformed will return to their original state. Natsumi's Angel, , also has the special ability to send things into a different dimension through a mirror similar to Kurumi's shadow. While in Natsumi’s personal dimension, the objects or subjects are put into a stasis field. The victims remain unconscious until their release and will wake up faster with resistance to Reiryoku. Ratatoskr: Ratatoskr is a secretive organization dedicated to peacefully resolving Spirit-related disasters through diplomacy rather than elimination. Founded after the first Spacequake 30 years prior, they operate from the high-tech airship Fraxinus, which serves as their mobile HQ. Unlike the AST (Anti-Spirit Team), Ratatoskr believes Spirits can coexist with humans if "sealed" through emotional connections - a mission spearheaded by their agent, Shido Itsuka. The group is later revealed to have ties to DEM Industries' shadowy past and the mysterious scientist Isaac Westcott. Formed after the first Spacequake, the AST operates under the government’s Special Disaster Response Division, viewing Spirits as existential threats. Their tactics prioritize immediate neutralization, often clashing with Ratatoskr’s methods. AST Combat Technology CR-Units (Combat Realizer Units) Power Source: Equipped with Realizers—quantum-computing devices that materialize weapons/armor from imagination. Variants: Standard-Issue: Lightweight exoskeletons (e.g., White Licorice) with flight capabilities and anti-Spirit rifles. They power everything from weapons to medical systems, but require immense computational skill and drain users' neural stamina. Variations Of Realizers: Medical Realizer: Used to treat injuries. It works faster and more efficiently than ordinary medical treatment, capable of fixing a broken[1] or even severed[6] limb within a day. Ashcroft-β: Used by DEM's airship , it was capable of sealing off Arubi Island from outside contact by jamming communications. It is also used by the Bandersnatch. allowing the mechanical soldiers to control Territory without a human brain. It was modeled after the brainwaves of the Wizard Artemisia Bell Ashcroft. As such, Origami suggests that capturing Artemisia to analyze her brainwaves would be a theoretical method of disabling the Banderstanch. Basic Realizer: Used by Fraxinus to generate Maryoku for and its Territory. Control Realizer: Used by Fraxinus to control its Permanent Territory, It can also generate Maryoku, but not as efficiently as the Basic Realizer. Micro Realizer: A Realizer small enough to be implanted into a person's brain. DEM used this to temporarily suppress Nia Honjo's memories of torture and experimentation from her captivity. Deus Ex Machina Industries: also known by the abbreviation of DEM, is a conglomerate based in England which provides the manufacturing and sales of Realizers. The corporation was co-founded by Isaac Westcott, Ellen Mathers, and Elliot Woodman over thirty years ago from when the story first started. Aside from the secretive Asgard Electronics, it is the only known industry that is able to manufacture Realizers for the world's military and police forces, including the AST. Due to their enthusiasm in hunting down the Spirits, they are considered economic rivals with Asgard Electronics, whom Ratatoskr is affiliated with. DEM also has Wizards who are able to use the CR-Units. It is said that their handling experience exceeds that of the special forces of different countries by a long shot. There is a hierarchy of Wizards within them called , which is a title granted to only the strongest Wizards in their employment. They are ranked in numbers with 1 being the strongest while the lowest number is unknown. The country's police, organizations, and armies, which are supplied with the Realizers by the DEM all have supervisors or maintenance officials deployed by the DEM company. The organization has multiple branches throughout the world, including Japan, though the main headquarters is in England. When Mukuro uses her Angel to retaliate against DEM, it is revealed that they have over 42 different facilities located around the globe. Being an economic powerhouse, DEM has almost unrivaled resources and weaponry at their disposal. Bandersnatch: A DEM humanoid doll or robot equipped with a Realizer that must be linked to a larger Realizer unit for it to function. Bandersnatch Droid DD007 - Bandernatchs created for aerial combat. Medical Bandernatchs - Bandernatchs created to medicine. They are more used as medical droids for Wizards. Satellite Humpty Dumpty - A giant Bandernatch satellite that belonged to D.E.M and was equipped with Realizers which stored a large number of Bandersnatchs for security. The original purpose of this satellite were unknown but the decommissioned satellite was used as an orbital weapon during a D.E.M conspiracy, sending itself through Earth's atmosphere like a meteorite in the attempt to kill off Mr. Westcott.
