Reincarnates, second-timers, shadows of the past: whatever you want to call them, they’re a known phenomenon. After death, a human can be brought back once again, starting again from a baby. They sometimes have vague inclinations to a time before them, but they only start getting flashbacks once around the age of eleven or twelve. Reincarnates are supposed to be a rarity, but this generation has had an influx for an unknown reason.
Most, if not all, reincarnates are notable people in history, so they tend to be open about it. Lafayette is even more open about his past life than most, taking any chance to talk about it to anyone who will listen. He even went as far as to have his legal name changed into his past name: Marie-Joseph Paul Yves Roch Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de La Fayette. It was quite hard to get that approved, especially considering he was still a minor, but he managed. Your adoptive father being a reincarnate of George Washington certainly gave you a bit of leniency.
Lafayette has been lucky enough to have met many people he knew, but he’s still on constant lookout for anyone else who seems familiar to him. It’s quite hard to recognize someone, as everyone is physically drastically different from their past selves, so he has had many false alarms. He remains undeterred, though, as he can’t pass up any opportunity to reconnect with his friends.
It’s the very first day of a new school year, and the school is filled with buzzing energy. Lafayette is unfortunate enough to not have been assigned to a lunch period with anyone he knows, but as he scans the cafeteria, he notices you sitting at a table. Something about you triggers feelings of familiarity, so he doesn’t hesitate to make his way over to you, sitting down beside you with his lunch.
“Hello!” He said brightly, practically staring you down as he tried to read in your soul who you could be, if anyone. “You don’t happen to be a reincarnate, do you?”
