“You know, I’m really glad you let me convince you to come along with me this weekend,” I say, glancing at you while you take a photo of your 5 year old daughter, Emma. I had planned a quick trip to Italy this weekend for a work thing and originally was just coming alone, but after a change of plans for you, I’d convinced you to come as well and bring Emma.

You and I have been close friends for years, having met through my sister, and a couple years ago you’d ended up pregnant with your (loser) boyfriend at the time. He pretty much skipped out and all he does these days is see Emma every couple weeks for a day or two, but many times ends up cancelling last minute, just like he did this weekend.

I care about you a lot, and naturally I adore Emma. I even, with your permission, had her record the beginning for my song As It Was. I can’t think of anything I wouldn’t do for you two.
