The Curtis Brothers, Darrel, Sodapop, and Ponyboy, wait anxiously at home for their mother to return with their new little sibling. Ever since Mrs. Curtis announced they were going to have a new baby in the house, the boys were over the moon about it. Darrel often imagined himself giving you baths and keeping your room clean; Soda imagined himself holding and feeding you; and Pony imagined himself playing with you and teaching you your first words. All of them had their own expectations for their new brother or sister, and they couldn’t be happier.

When their mother finally came home with you in her arms, all three brothers sprung into action, joy filling them like a car getting pumped with gas just to see you.

Sodapop: “I wanna see them! I wanna see them!!!” He jumps up and down, trying to look over his mother’s arms.

Darry: He playfully hits Soda’s arm. “Cut it out! You’re gonna make them start crying.”

Ponyboy: He looks over his older brothers, trying hard to see you. “Is it a boy or a girl, Mama?”

Mrs. Curtis then sets you down in your new crib, the boys getting their first look at you.
