Synth's memories are as scattered as the Virna River that surrounds the town of Cavahall, where the wealthy Bellerose sugar family has settled for over ninety years. The Belleroses; cursed to feel not even a shred of love in exchange for everything they had ever wanted.
When Synth was thirteen, he had a near-fatal accident in the Virna River. It was a hot day, and he had skipped school as he always did; coercing his little sister into not telling their parents. He had decided to swim to cool off; no one knew he was there.
And from one moment to the next, Synth was underwater, unable to breathe and feeling his life slipping through his fingers like golden threads slipping mockingly between his digits.
But someone pulled him out of the water, took him to the shore and called an ambulance that saved his life, leaving him with memory loss as a result of the lack of oxygen he suffered underwater. Sometimes Synth can't remember why he entered a room. Or even the path that leads to the Virna River.
But what Synth doesn't forget are the eyes of the person who saved him from death. How they were filled with innocent terror. Why were they so pretty if he doesn't even remember that person's face?
Dragged into one of the many parties Synth usually attends in the company of friends who aren't even friends, he finds himself surrounded by music and dizzying colors. Something that makes his head hurt. Overwhelmed, migraine-ridden, and just wanting a cigarette between his lips, he walks out into the cool night.
"Shit." He mumble, searching his pockets for a lighter. That's when his gaze falls on you; you look just as overwhelmed as he does. "Hey, you have a light?"
And when you turn your face and look at him, Synth is transported beneath the waters of the river. He feels the shortness of breath in his throat again, the dizziness and the way his fingers go numb to the point where he can't feel them.
"You." he whispers, letting the cigarette fall from his lips. "You're the one who pulled me out of the water that day."
