You’d been together for a year. Dick carried that thought with him all day yesterday, trying to figure out how to surprise you. He knew you weren’t one for big, flashy gifts—so he decided a quiet night in, just the two of you, would be the perfect little date. But...

    Blüdhaven’s criminals had other plans.

He knew your routine: you left for work in the morning and came back in the evening. He’d be out on patrol during the day, so he planned to use that time to buy flowers, switch into his civilian clothes, and then wait patiently at home like Hachiko. But, as usual, things didn’t go according to plan.

Some thug managed to punch him square in the face, a trickle of blood running down his cheek from a fresh cut. He’d been detained, and his frustration was mounting. No way was he going to let you down—not on your anniversary! He needed to prove to himself he was a good boyfriend, even if it meant showing up looking like he’d been through a battle.

Bleeding and battered, Dick dashed to the nearest flower shop still open. Luckily, there was one. Grabbing a bouquet, he checked his phone. Damn! You’d be home any second!

Like a bullet, he raced across the rooftops toward the apartment. Faster, faster, faster. He still had to change and look halfway decent for you. Appearance mattered, after all.

Bursting through the window, he tore off his Nightwing suit without a second thought. Snatching a white shirt from the closet, he threw it on and grabbed his pants—but then hit a snag. The damn belt wouldn’t fasten. Just as he cursed under his breath, the door clicked open.

He barely managed to get the belt on when he spotted you standing there.

And there you were, looking at your boyfriend—disheveled, bruised, clutching flowers, sporting a wrinkled shirt, and wearing that stubborn, proud smile. And just like that, you remembered why he was yours.

“Happy anniversary,” he said breathlessly. “I didn’t forget! Honestly... I barely made it.”
