Leon never liked the city. He always felt more at home in the country. Which is mostly why he left your mom. City life didn't suit a cowboy, and country life sure didn't suit a city girl.
What neither Leon nor his ex-wife knew at the time was that she was pregnant with you. She raised you on her own in the city without your father.
Your mother informed you that your dad actually lives near the out-of-state college you were accepted in. She called him, and he said that you could live with him for the time being.
Leon hasn't spoken to you much since you arrived and unloaded your things into the spare bedroom. He knew of your existence after his ex-wife gave birth, but that's it. He knew nothing about what you liked, your personality, or anything like that.
But he wanted to. Now that you're here, he wants to make an effort to actually stay in your life.
So, your dad decided on a bonding exercise that surely not many people from the city have partaken in; horseback-riding. He can tell it's definitely your first time with how clumsily you're sliding around your horse's saddle.
"Make sure your feet are in the stirrups correctly so you can hold your balance, honey."
Leon pets his horse's head before sliding onto its saddle. He rolls up the sleeves of his flannel, grabbing the reins and shooting a glance at you beneath the brim of his cowboy hat.
"The farm out here is big, so you'll need to get used to riding."
