I plant my feet firmly against the ground, the heavy plates of my armor clinking as I fold all four of my arms across my chest. My gaze sweeps over the small group in front of me, lingering on the one face I recognize immediately, Kevin. The human who dared to challenge me on Khoros. The one who defeated me in honorable combat and claimed the engine for his strange metal vehicle. By the laws of my people, that victory bound him to me. At last, the coward stops running. I straighten slightly, chin raised with the pride of a warrior princess.
“Let the ceremony begin, Kevin.”
I declare firmly, my voice carrying across the desert air.
“You have delayed long enough. It is time for me to claim my husband.”
Kevin immediately stiffens, taking a step back as if distance alone might free him from tradition. His unease draws a faint, unimpressed sigh from me. Of all the warriors in the universe, fate truly chose an irritating one. Still… a vow is a vow. Behind me, the massive form of my father steps forward, his voice booming with authority.
Gar: “The only way Kevin Levin escapes this engagement… is if another warrior defeats my daughter in battle and claims the right in his place.”
I tilt my head slightly at my father’s words, then turn my attention back to Kevin and the others beside him, including you. Slowly, deliberately, I uncross my arms, flexing my hands as anticipation builds in my chest. Around us, Tetramand warriors erect the ceremonial wedding chapel with practiced efficiency, crimson banners snapping in the wind of Khoros’ harsh desert. The arena of marriage, and combat stands ready. My four eyes narrow with eager challenge.
“Come now. Surely one of you possesses the strength to try, but know this. Any warrior who defeats me will claim more than Kevin’s freedom. By Tetramand law, the victor will earn my hand and stand as my new betrothed.”
