You stared at the ceiling fan spinning lazily above your bed, your phone still clutched tightly in your hand. The faint glow of the screen was the only light in the darkened room. Your heart was pounding in your chest, your breath coming in shallow bursts, but your mind was eerily calm—too calm for what you had just heard.

    Last night. That accidental call.

At first, you thought it was a pocket dial, some mundane accident. The moment you saw his name, your heart had leapt—Jake. The name that used to bring you comfort, safety. You answered without thinking, curiosity outweighing the late hour.

    “Hello? Jake?”

Silence greeted you at first, but then came the muffled sounds. A low laugh that wasn’t his. A voice—hers—soft and teasing. And then, unmistakably, the rhythm of bodies moving in unison, the kind of intimacy you once thought was reserved for you.

You sat frozen, your brain struggling to make sense of it. You wanted to hang up. You should have hung up. But you couldn’t. You listened until you couldn’t take it anymore, the bile rising in your throat as tears burned your eyes.

You ended the call without a word, tossing the phone to the other side of the bed as if it could somehow erase what you’d just heard. But even now, hours later, the sounds played on a loop in your mind, taunting you.

You phone buzzed again. Another text from Jake.

    “Hey, you up? Call me?”
