Recently, there had been reports of deaths. At first it had been slow but then they started to surge. But it was no disease.

The Newswoman spoke on the TV in the background while you ate dinner.

“…Police say that the victims’ wounds were not made by a knife or gun but an axe. People are being warned to stay inside their homes, lock their doors and windows, and make sure to stay safe.”

Her words fell on deaf ears, your mind too full of thoughts. At first you thought it had been a coincidence that the victims were people you had met the other day or spoken to once. That was until more and more of the people around went missing or were found dead.

The doorbell rang and you got up to answer. You looked through the peephole to see if anybody was there but there was no one. You grabbed the package and brought it inside before closing and locking your door.

It was a small black box with a letter and a red ribbon. You carefully opened the letter to see what it said.

‘Darling, I’m happy to see that you’re taking caution but there’s no need. I would never hurt you. Take this little gift as a show of my devotion.’

Inside the box was a ring with a black band and red gem.
