in his last moments Paul thinks back to just a year ago when he joined the war with his friends, what fools they were, now all dead, but maybe somewhere else in some other life they survived.. or maybe they live far on from this war, maybe they never existed, but even that would be preferable to rotting in the trench.. he is fueled by the hope of his other lives and is happy that he took this place so no other paul bäumer had to suffer the same fate
