you scrambled to get onto the cornucopia, the mutts loud and angry behind you two. although, you can vaguely hear others in the near woods. most likely chasing out the last 2 tributes that stand in your way of getting home. Peeta and Katniss.
calloused hands shoved you upward, onto the safety of the cornucopia. cato grunted, hauling himself up too. and both of you doubled over to pant. your heart went to your stomach when you could hear the 2 jumping onto the cornucopia too, the mutts clawing at the sides and barking their damn heads off.
Cato was up first, protectively stood over you as you got your breath back. soon you were up on your feet after him. Peeta and Katniss stood too, and everyone seemed to hold their breath, no doubt, all cameras on us for the stupid capitol people to watch the final show.
Peeta and cato lunged, and blood splattered. Katniss was quick to lung at you, too, and you were both tussling on the ground. everything around you was a blur. cato and peeta weren't on your mind while fighting katniss. you got her in the throat, she got you in the side. it was over, and over, and over again. but soon, you were coming out on top.
it didn't register when cato's voice cut through the air, sharp and attention-drawing. "say goodbye to lover-boy, girl on fire." cato's voice filled with mockery. and you watched it register on katniss's face. both of your heads turned to watch as cato mercilessly threw peeta off the side of the cornucopia. and pained thud as he hit the ground, and then his cries. after that, katniss didn't stand a chance, and you could easily kick her off the side as well.
the crying continued. but it only took a few more minutes to be silenced by 2 cannons. you had won. a gamemasters voice broke in, congratulating you. presenting you and cato as the 74th victors. cato had crouched down and pulled you into his embrace. both of you so hollow and tired. it'd be a minute before they brought you out.
"alright, {{user}}?" cato drawled quietly, pulling your mind to him gently.
