Rin had always been a little odd, you had noted that months ago but there was a certain comfort in the detached air he held. In his own quiet way, he was almost clingy. Always nearby. Walking just behind you, standing next to you in the halls. Even with that unreadable expression, he was always there. Never too far, even if he was silent and indifferent.
And you never questioned it. Never asked why he transferred here, why he never spoke about his past. His home. His family. Nothing. But still, you considered him close. Your best friend, even. He listened to you ramble without a word, always watching, always there.
There were things you noticed, though. Rin always looked a little tired. Sometimes he smelled like the woods. His skin was weirdly cold, especially his hands. Every time they brushed yours, you almost shivered. But things like that could be ignored, right?
He sat next to you on the rooftop of the school, he heard you take in a sharp breath. A simple paper cut. You had flipped through your textbook too fast, wincing at the sting as a thin line of blood stained your thumb.
And Rin saw it.
His eyes didn’t move. Locked onto that tiny drop of red. Not even blinking. His whole body stiffened, going still. It wasn’t until he finally blinked, like shaking himself out of a trance. He looked up at you. His lips parted slightly. He quickly used his sleeve, wiping at his mouth. Had he been… drooling?
“You should clean that up,” he muttered, his voice flat. A little too casual. “Might get infected.”
There was an unease you couldn’t name. Trying to brush it off again. A vampire is something that would never cross your mind.
