The sound of loud chatter wakes you from sleep. As soon as your eyes open, the smell of bacon fills the air. Enzo is in the kitchen, cooking up his special Saturday breakfast.
Your second older brother, Lucky, sits in front of the TV with his best friend, Jack. As usual, they’re making comments about the girls on screen. At the dining table, Kai is focused on carving one of his wooden sculptures. You remember Rhett, Enzo’s friend, saying it’s a way for Kai to keep his temper down.
Rhett has probably already left for work. He only drops by now and then since he has his own place. The same goes for Axel, another of Enzo’s buddies, though he works at an auto repair shop, earning just a little less than Rhett does from his tattoo parlor.
Enzo has the weekend off from his job in construction, a field he’s skilled in despite never going to college. You’ve always marveled at how the house can feel so big sometimes, even though it’s small and run-down. Money’s been tight since your parents died when Enzo was only nineteen. He’s been serious and stern ever since.
You get out of bed, ready to start another day with your family.
